The methods adopted for cooling desktop computers are:
Air cooling: Move air around or to computer enclosures for heat management..Mostly done via using fans.
Liquid submersion cooling:Submersing the computer's components in a thermally conductive liquid for reducing heat.
Conductive and radiative cooling:Increasing the surface area which can radiate heat.
Spot cooling: Individual components usually have their own cooling systems in place. Components which are individually cooled include, but are not limited to, the CPU etc.
Passive heat sink cooling:Passive heat sink cooling involves attaching a block of machined or extruded metal to the part that needs cooling.
Active heat sink cooling: Active heat-sink with a large fan located inside the unit and attached fan controller in background.
Peltier cooling or thermoelectric cooling:Using thermocouples laid out next to each other to allow for a substantial amount of heat transfer.
Water cooling: Water cooling is largely associated with overclocking.There are do-it-yourself setups available.
Heat pipe:A hollow tube containing a heat transfer liquid is used. Liquid evaporates carrying heat to the cool end, where it condenses and then returns to the hot end.
Liquid nitrogen: Liquid nitrogen may be used to cool an overclocked PC.
Soft cooling: Software is used to take advantage of CPU power saving technologies to minimize energy use. This is done using stop or pause instructions to turn off or put in standby state.
Among these the air cooling is commonly used.
